What are NDT services?

Industrial NDT testing services are various techniques and procedures used to ensure a manufactured component, part or product has been made to the required standard. Its integrity is tested without destroying the piece which saves time and money and provides more accurate results than if a piece is pushed to breaking point which is what destructive testing services (DT) involve.

What are the main types of NDT?

NDT solutions include:

– magnetic particle testing – identifies impurities on or just below the surface of a workpiece using magnetic fields and coloured particles.
– ultrasonic testing – uses sound waves to detect flaws in the workpiece and are displayed on a screen for the NDT technician to evaluate.
– visual penetrant testing method – typically used on non-ferrous metals, this method identifies impurities such as cracks. It involves spraying a dyed liquid onto the workpiece which sinks into any cracks.
– radiography testing – uses a radiographic film and a radiation source such as an x-ray to detect defects which will darken the film in the affected areas.

What does an NDT inspector do?

An NDT inspector’s role is to ensure the tests are carried out accurately and in accordance with industry standards and regulations. Their main responsibility is NDT management by coordinating and overseeing the NDT testing and inspection activities.
