What is coded welding?

Coded welding refers to the specific methods used in the welding process carried out by welders who have obtained an industry-approved qualification such as BS EN ISO standards in the UK. This enables them to carry out certain types of welds and ensures they have the required level of skill to be able to create reliable welds that meet industry standards.

What is the purpose of a welding code?

Welding codes are used to determine the ability of coded welders to carry out particular types of welds. The coding means the welder has met the required standard in that particular type of weld. This is demonstrated by them providing a welding sample that is examined by an approved examiner who will assess their capabilities with a welder approval test. A worker can become a single or multi-coded welder, depending on the level of approval they receive. This ensures different types of welds are created to the highest standards so that they are fit for purpose.

What are the different types of welding joints?

The type of weld used will depend on the materials being used, the experience of the welder and the project. Popular types of welds include edge, fillet, groove, seam and spot. When a weld is combined with a joint, it becomes a welding joint and the main types of these are butt, corner, edge, lap and tee joints. Again, the type of welding joint used will be determined by the nature of the project and the experience of the welder.

How long does a weld last?

The lifespan of a weld will depend on the welding process used, the expertise of the coded welder and the type of material. If a steel weld is in a corrosive environment, it may only last a few years whereas an expertly-produced weld on low-carbon steel can last for decades.
