The surface finish is as the name suggests. It is the finish of the final piece following its manufacturing process therefore the way it was created will have an impact on the finish. Each process creates a different type of finish so CNC milling or grinding a piece will result in a different finish than turning or sawing. Additive surface finishes, such as painting are common and can be extremely varied depending on the intended function of the part in service.

Metal surface finishes through machining include buffing, polishing, grinding, shot-blasting and honing. Additionally parts can be finished by a number of varied processes including, cleaning, painting, plating, and anodising.
